Nobody can replace your personal writing, but we can find any aspects of your writing that requires clarification and correction of grammar or spelling. An important caveat is that when you use our services for research papers (such as for university submissions) we cannot ethically change content or correct any aspect of the underlying research. All we can do is to make sure that it is worded correctly to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation.
If you prefer to let us correct your correspondence after proofreading, we can do that too (subject to the caveat for research papers, above, because some institutions may penalize you for letting us change the actual contents). In general, editing is an exacting effort, requiring objectivity, attention to detail, and patience. While it cannot turn a poor story into a good one, careful editing can improve a lackluster text and contribute to clarity and flow.
We offer line editing where we examine your text for style and language decisions. Dialogue is a vital tool for conveying character attributes, telling the story, and manipulating the pace of a narrative. It can also contribute to context and theme. However, dialogue in fiction is no exact replica of what we might hear on the street, but a simulation of conversation. For sharp, effective dialogue, with flow and consistency, we revise a manuscript, checking aspects like clutter, conciseness, and unnecessary terms and expressions.
We also offer copy editing focused on the mechanics of the writing, to make sure your English adheres to standard practice (and any specific style guide). We keep speeches concise and uncluttered by removing vocalizations and other extraneous terms. We truncate lengthy introductions and small talk, unless they contribute significantly to the narrative in some way.
